More peeps

Ok, so I'm back again. Talked to my youngest daughter (Bayou Mommy) and she explained to me how to fix my blog and now I can load a bunch of pics all at once. Yay! Thanks honey.
So here are the peeps in the brooder box.
And here they are in the mini-coop.
You can see they are much bigger. That's it, just trying out the new and better way to do pics.

Peeps

Well I'm back. Gramma got my computer working, so can blog again, however it's only letting me load one pic and that's it. I have no clue what to do except maybe change blog sites.
Anyway we moved the babies into the portable coop in the garage and they continue to grow and do well. I think in a couple of weeks they will be able to go into the coop extension in the barn. Still don't know the hen to rooster ratio, just gotta wait.

Mothers Day Miracle

Well we had a miracle (at least to us anyway) today. I decided to take out the two mangers because the horses are always throwing the hay on the ground and then eating it. Behind the big manger are horizontal boards to keep the horse from kicking the steel barn siding. They are about five feet high with one inch spaces between the boards. As I start to take the manger apart I see movement behind the boards. I stood up on the manger and looked behind the boards and see a chicken. I don't know how she got back there, but it looked like Alice and I reached down and pulled her out. I put her on the ground and called her a dumb chicken and thought no more about it. Tonight when I went down to close the coop and the barn and count chickens I counted nine. There hasn't been nine since Ethel disappeared. So I counted again and again and again. Ethel was back. So it had to be her behind the boards, no other explanation fits. Three weeks and three days. She must have been eating the hay seeds that fall behind there when I feed the horses, but she hasn't had any water. She seems fine, but I'll have to watch her to make sure. Gramma cried. We are happy to have her back. Unbelievable.

Peeps

Ok. No pics, because my computer frozeup and I am using Gramma's IPAD. The peeps are growing like mad. When we went to bed Friday night they did not have tail feathers, but they had them Saturday morning. Yikes! It has been fun so far hatching our own eggs and watching them grow. We will probably move them out to the garage in about a week. I have the mobile coop set up and ready. Now we just wait and see how many hens we get. Later.

Peep update

We got all the chicks in the brooders now.
Here's the Farmer's Wife with our homemade brooders.
Five peeps in one.
Four peeps in the other. Yes, we lost the one we were worried about. Don't know why. Just Mother nature I guess. All the others seem healthy and really cute. They are all eating, drinking, and pooping. They grow fast, so it won't be too long before we move them out of the house. I want mostly hens, but I want one Rooster that I can pick up and pet and make him my buddy, cause Butch attacked me from behind again yesterday and I've had about enough. Just like Frank. Gramma can't go down to the barn without a stick. So I'm going to pick these little ones up and make them my friends. Maybe it will work, we'll see. Bye

Peep Report

Okay. Ten eggs in, ten chickens out. Yayyyy! Three eggs hatched yesterday and the other seven today.
These are the ones from yesterday in the brooder box.
I know it's hard to tell but there is seven in the incubator. We're kind of worried about one of them, but hopefully it will make it. They say you should expect no more than 50% to 75%  hatch, so we are awesome! Seven Marans and three Maran-Wellsummer crosses. Right now they all look the same. Should be interesting to see how they turn out. Cross your fingers and hope for hens. This is fun. Go figure.

Farm news

Well not much has been happening around here until yesterday morning. One of our eggs pipped. Can you see the crack?
This morning it cracked open.
Turns out there was a chicken inside.
We are pretty excited. As I write this, seven more eggs have pipped. This is much better than we hoped for. Now hopefully they will all hatch out by tomorrow and then we wait to see how many hens we get. I told Antoine (now known as Butch due to his comb loss) that if we didn't get fertile eggs he was done. So I guess he gets to stay. In other news I popped another coyote yesterday morning. One less chicken and pheasant killer. It seems that we still have quite a few around. Anyway when the other eggs hatch I'll post again, bye.
